Workshop Purpose and Learning Objectives

 

This workshop is designed to equip Team Leaders with the critical skills needed in today's changing environment. The focus is on key leadership coaching skills that foster high performance from employees. Specifically, as a result of this training you will:

 

  •  have a clearer understanding of what coaching is and what coaches do

  • learn techniques for communicating with your team in positive ways

  • learn leadership/coaching styles, and analyze your preferred style

  • learn when coaching is appropriate and when other leadership approaches are more appropriate

  • learn techniques to diagnose causes and impact of problem performance

  • be able to give honest, direct, constructive feedback with confidence

  • be able to coach and work with your team to solve problems and improve performance

Introduction

 

What is coaching?

  • Identify great coaches and what makes them great

  • Describe leadership in team environment

 

From player to coach

  • The difference between being a great player and a great coach

  • Do's and Don't for effective coaching

 

Assessing your style as a team leader

  • Individual questionnaire

  • Interpretation of results

  • Preference for directing (task emphasis) vs. supporting (relationship emphasis)

 

Contrasting forceful or directive leadership and enabling or supporting leadership

  • Examples of directing behavior

  • Examples of supporting behavior

  • Appropriate application of each

 

Four leadership styles and where coaching fits in

  • Directing, Influencing, Collaborating and Delegating styles

  • Flexing:  Choosing style s appropriately

Identifying the needs of the employees and the demands of the coaching situation and choosing styles appropriately

 

Overusing and underusing particular styles

  • Examples of overuse and underuse of directing and enabling styles

  • Identifying most preferred style and style(s) where you need to become more skillful

Identifying types of performance needs  

  • The most common problems faced by participants

  • How to state performance needs as a gap between what should be happening and what is happening

  • Importance of being clear and specific about what is expected

Analysis of an actual problem

 

Selecting an actual performance problem and using this method to analyze it for causes, manifestations, urgency

 

When to coach  

  • Identifying typical situations that will require coaching

  • Using task assignments and team meetings as coaching opportunities
