Local Government Experience

Many local governments have sought our support in strategic planning, organizational change initiatives, executive development, executive coaching, management development, and employee training.  Our skilled facilitators are also frequently asked to facilitate annual planning retreats for elected officials.

 

In many cases, our facilitators have helped stakeholders with conflicting interests reach consensus on sensitive and difficult issues. We have partnered with these organizations to achieve significant results while carefully managing costs. Below are brief descriptions of some of those projects.

 

City of Charlotte, NC

  • City Council:   Facilitated a City Council retreat; Facilitated a series of work sessions with representatives of City Council and Mecklenburg County Board of Commissioners regarding a site for the new arena.  Facilitated a retreat on affordable housing for City Council, Charlotte Housing Authority Board, and Board of the Charlotte Housing Partnership.  Facilitated several Council planning workshops.  

  • Executive Team/Manager’s Cabinet: Facilitated retreats for the City Manager, Assistant City Managers, and all Department Heads (Key Business Executives) for the past 3 years.  

  • Executive Team Facilitation:  For the past two years, we facilitated the strategic problem solving work of the executive team and “sub-cabinets” of Key Business Executives focused on Council Priorities and Organizational Priorities.  Facilitated the KBE sessions designing the criteria and guidelines for changing the Career Development fund to the recruiting and retention pool fund.  

  • Executive Development/Management Development:  Custom designed and delivered a series of executive development sessions for the Executive Team, Division Heads, and other middle managers.  

  • Department Planning Retreats, Team Alignment/Teambuilding:  Facilitated several planning retreats for Department management teams; Facilitated team sessions for several individual departments and for interdepartmental teams.  

  • Team Assessment: Conducted focus groups and interviews to help a department deal with declining morale and dissatisfaction  

  • Task Force Facilitation: Facilitated the work of numerous cross-functional teams and task forces: Technology Management Team, Small Business Enterprise Team, Strategic Workforce Development Team  

  • Employee Training:  Conducted several custom workshops open to employees from across the organization  

  • Customer Service Survey:  Conducted a customized customer service survey for the Business Support Services group  

  • Facilitator Training:  Provided training in facilitation skills and conflict management skills for staff for use with community groups  

  • Restructuring Government:  Facilitated focus groups in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department and the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Fire Department to generate ideas for reducing costs, improving processes, redesigning procedures, and making other internal improvements and efficiencies.  

  • Performance Consulting - Performance Needs Analysis:  Conducted training for the training staff of both the City and Mecklenburg County.  

  • Executive Coaching:   Provided one-on-one coaching to individuals.

 

Mecklenburg County - 13 County Region (NC)

 

Facilitated the planning and launch of a 13-County Regional Summit on the Environment, sponsored by Mecklenburg County.

 

Wake County NC

 

  • Board of Commissioners Retreats: Facilitated planning retreats in 2000, 2001, and 2003; facilitated a work session on Managing Growth with the Board of Commissioners and the Planning Board

  • Management (Staff) Team Retreats: Facilitated the last 3 annual retreats

  • Executive Development: Conducted a series of development programs and retreats for the Executive Team, including 360 degree assessment and feedback, developmental workshops, a strategic planning process, and individual coaching.

  • Department Retreats: Facilitated several Departmental planning retreats

 

City of Hickory NC

 

City Council Retreat: Facilitated a retreat for the newly elected Council

 

Guilford County NC

 

  • Executive Development: Provided custom designed executive development for the Executive Team, including 360 degree feedback for Department Heads; Provided training for all middle managers in several areas

  • Performance Alignment: We consulted with the Human Resources Department and Executive staff regarding revisions to the performance appraisal system, and provided a customized training program to introduce the system to all managers.  Trained in-house trainers to deliver this program.

  • Team Leaders: Provided training in team leader facilitation skills for those involved in work teams, cross-functional teams, and re-engineering project teams

  • Team Building and Alignment: Conducted team building and alignment consulting in several Departments

  • Competency Model and Assessment: Developed a Human Resources competency model; designed and implemented a 360 survey based on the model

 

City of Greensboro NC

 

  • Changing the Culture: Conducted a specially designed training program for the top 100 managers in the organization, including executive level, focused on four critical values

  • Executive Team Facilitation/Strategic Planning: Facilitated numerous strategic planning sessions for the Executive Team

  • Infrastructure Team Planning and Training: Facilitated strategic planning sessions for a team of the eight operating departments of the City, planning conferences with the next level of managers, and provided team training to these groups.

  • Employee Training: Continue to provide several courses for managers and employees

 

City of Falls Church, VA

  • Performance Alignment consulting and training: Worked with the Executive Team and the Human Resources Director to design a new performance management system to support their move to pay-for-performance. Provided training for the executive team and all levels of management in how to use the system effectively

  • Strategic Business Planning: Worked with the Executive Team on how to develop strategic business plans. 

  • City Council Retreat: Facilitated a retreat for the newly elected Council

  • Employee Focus Groups – Organizational Culture: Conducted a number of employee focus groups to identify concerns regarding the changing organizational culture.

 

City of Fayetteville NC

 

Ombudsman Program: Developed an ombudsman program to support one of the Manager’s key initiatives

 

Warren County, NC

 

Management Team Alignment: Provided teambuilding consulting and training for the executive team.

 

NC Association of County Commissioners

 

Management Team Alignment: Provided teambuilding consulting and training for the executive team.
